New Delhi: WhatsApp is planning to introduce usernames and unique IDs, allowing users to send messages and make voice or video calls without sharing their phone numbers, according to reports.
The feature is expected to roll out globally by June 2026 and will be optional, enabling users to continue using phone numbers if they prefer.
Both individuals and businesses are likely to reserve unique handles, similar to other social media platforms. The move is aimed at enhancing privacy and making it easier to connect with new contacts, groups and businesses. “We are excited to bring usernames to WhatsApp in the future to help people connect without having to share their phone numbers,” the company said.
In addition, WhatsApp is exploring a dynamic pricing model for businesses, where companies may bid in real time to send marketing messages. The system is expected to be tested in the second half of 2026 and could be implemented in 2027. India, with over 500 million users, remains a key market. A recent report by Meta Platforms and the Retailers Association of India said 72 per cent of product discovery happens on WhatsApp.
